Acute toxicity of a deltamethrin based pesticide (DBP) to the Neotropical electric fish Microsternarchus cf. bilineatus (Gymnotiformes) Acta Amazonica
CHAVES,Valesca de Souza; MARCON,Jaydione Luiz; DUNCAN,Wallice Paxiúba; ALVES-GOMES,José Antônio.
ABSTRACT Deltamethrin is a pyrethroid insecticide widely used in pest control in Brazilian agriculture. The intensive and disordered use of this pesticide in the Amazon region can drive it into aquatic ecosystems in several ways, but mainly by runoff and leaching. The present study was conceived to determine the acute toxicity (LC50) of a deltamethrin based pesticide (DBP) and to characterize its effects on two biochemical biomarkers, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), in tissues of the electric fish Microsternarchus cf. bilineatus. Fishes were exposed to concentrations of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 μg L-1 of DBP for up to 96 hours. For each treatment, the absolute activity of the enzymes GST (muscle and liver) and AChE (muscle and...

Biochemical and cellularchanges in Oreochromis niloticus related to the water pollution of a degraded river - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i3.13207 Biological Sciences
Cruz, Zilma Maria Almeida; Universidade Vila Velha; Castro, Rodrigo Roque Lesqueves de; Universidade Vila Velha; Canal, Adriana; Azevedo Júnior, Romildo Rocha; Universidade Vila Velha; Silva, Ary Gomes da; Universidade Vila Velha; Ramos, Alessandro; Universidade Vila Velha.
The effects of polluted water at three sites in the Marinho River, Brazil, on Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilápia) were investigated using histological, hematological and biochemical approaches. Fish exposed to the impacted water demonstrated that histological changes in gills were accompanied by nuclear and micronuclei abnormalities in cells. The activity of liver and plasma biomarkers (alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and liver glutathione S-transferase (GST)) showed an expressive change due to the. The results were also correlated with the highest levels of Cu+2, Zn+2 and Mn+2 in the water. The data of this study evidenced the importance of using a set of biomarkers to...

Changes in endogenous tissue glutathione level in relation to murine ascites tumor growth and the anticancer activity of cisplatin BJMBR
Khynriam,D.; Prasad,S.B..
Changes in glutathione levels were determined in tissues of 11- to 12-week-old Swiss albino mice at different stages of Dalton's lymphoma tumor growth and following cisplatin (8 mg/kg body weight, ip) treatment for 24-96 h, keeping 4-5 animals in each experimental group. Glutathione levels increased in spleen of tumor-bearing compared to normal mice (9.95 ± 0.14 vs 7.86 ± 1.64 µmol/g wet weight, P<=0.05) but decreased in blood (0.64 ± 0.10 vs 0.85 ± 0.09 mg/ml) and testes (9.28 ± 0.15 vs 10.16 ± 0.28 µmol/g wet weight, P<=0.05). Dalton's lymphoma cells showed an increase in glutathione concentration (4.43 ± 0.26 µmol/g wet weight) as compared to splenocytes, their normal counterpart (3.62 ± 0.41 µmol/g wet weight). With the progression of tumor in...

Effect of an aqueous extract of Scoparia dulcis on blood glucose, plasma insulin and some polyol pathway enzymes in experimental rat diabetes BJMBR
Latha,M.; Pari,L..
The effects of an aqueous extract of the plant Scoparia dulcis (200 mg/kg) on the polyol pathway and lipid peroxidation were examined in the liver of streptozotocin adult diabetic male albino Wistar rats. The diabetic control rats (N = 6) presented a significant increase in blood glucose, sorbitol dehydrogenase, glycosylated hemoglobin and lipid peroxidation markers such as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and hydroperoxides, and a significant decrease in plasma insulin and antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and reduced glutathione (GSH) compared to normal rats (N = 6). Scoparia dulcis plant extract (SPEt, 200 mg kg-1 day-1) and glibenclamide (600 µg kg-1 day-1), a reference drug, were...
